Project Guide

Since we started publishing online, we’ve learned a lot and had to revise some goals for releasing a print issue—and we’ve now completely switched our plans to digital publishing. Originally we intended to put out a once-yearly print journal on a regular schedule. But now we’re thinking a little differently: online and electronic publishing is great, and getting better all the time. We’ll still do a print journal someday, and make it into something really special. But now our plan is to release e-books—both one-off, short releases, and anthologies with long-form essays, short fiction, and poetry.

The Creosote Journal website is updated weekly, publishing mostly short things (essays, book reviews, and blog posts) and photo essays. Our planned e-book anthologies will contain longer things: fiction, long-form narrative essays, visual art, poetry, photography, and interviews. This will be a part of launching Creosote Books, a tiny publishing house.

We’ve also recently revised our mission: we’re still about the West Coast, with California-based writers in the San Francisco and Los Angeles areas. But as our base of operations moved, first to Mexico and now to Berlin, it makes sense to follow the sensibility that was already emerging in the journal, more international in spirit, and that the regional focus needed to be expanded and made more inclusive.

The first e-book anthology is postponed indefinitely.
